Master in English Applied Linguistics (Methods and Applications): Within this two years program, students will have the opportunity to assimilate notions of English linguistics. The program aims to provide knowledge of theoretical and applied linguistics, addressing to those who are interested in the methodological and practical aspects of linguistic analysis.

Duration: 4 semesters.

Organisation: This postgraduate program aims to provide students with knowledge in the fundamental areas of English linguistics: Lexicon, Syntax, Phonology, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis, Teaching English, Language Acquisition, History of English Language.

Courses: Advanced workshops of practical English (translation and retroversion); English Language Teaching; Phonology; Language and Culture; Methods for Computer Processing of Natural Language (corpus linguistics, statistical methods, glossaries); Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis; Linguistic Representations in the Media; Sociolinguistics; English Syntax and Comparative Syntax; Text Typology; Lexical Semantics; The Structure of Words; The History of English Vocabulary; The Theory of Linguistic Changes; English Language Varieties.

Admission possibilities: The admission exam will be held in September. The MA is open for graduates of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures or the Faculty of Letters, good English speakers. The file must include: i. resume (in English), ii. Cover letter (in English, maximum 2 A4 pages), iii. the graduation thesis summary (in English, maximum 2 A4 pages). The admission exam consists of: (1) interview and (2) the evaluation of the candidate's file.

Master in Contemporary Literary Translations

Courses: Directions in Contemporary Literary Translations, Subtitles (Bogdan Stănescu, TVR), Contemporary Literary Translation Workshop from and into English (Martin Potter), Grammar Retro, Mass media and Advertising, Press Module (radio, TV, written, Internet: Mirela Nicolae, Radio România Cultural), Book editing (Bogdan Stănescu, Polirom Publishing House), The Technique of Literary Translation, Language practice (James Christian Brown).

Language practice: Students work on grammar and literary texts together with the students. A British teacher holds a Language enhancement and English teaching course. A translation of a British and American literary/culturally text is done with the authors on the Internet. Each group works with at least a native teacher (British and American).

Translation of contemporary poems for Radio România Cultural within the poetry pro International Project (together with Anne Stewart, Literary Agent Great Britain and 80 British poets) supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute and British Council, London/Bucharest.

Admission possibilities: Graduates of any higher education institution that know English very well can attend the admission exam (with graduate degree). The admission exam includes a written exam (translation and retroversion, without dictionary) and an oral exam (an attention interview were candidates come with a resume in Romanian). The candidates that succeed are required to send an e-mail to the Program director, Professor PhD Lidia Vianu: before the subscription (for any kind of information) and after the exam in order to be written on the correspondence list and to be able to receive all announces related the admission in the first year.
