Introduction to Native American Studies

This course is offered every Spring semester for first-year American Studies students in the American Studies Program within the Department of English, University of Bucharest.

Description and goals
This course will give us an opportunity to explore the multi-faceted cultural identities of the first inhabitants of the North American continent. An investigation of these extraordinarily rich areas of culture, usually left out of the canon, needs to develop along the lines of a critical perspective on colonial and postcolonial (or neo-colonial) situations affecting the power relations among ethnic groups. The goal of this class will be to provide an introduction to the study of Native American history and literature(s), with an emphasis on cultural diversity, the history of resistance, hybridity and global perspectives. We will read a series of texts for each weekly class, focusing on 20th century productions in the area of literature and film.
